સુન્દરકાંડ.
અથ ચતુસ્ત્રિંશસ્સર્ગઃ

તસ્યાત્ તદ્વચનં શ્રુત્વા હનુમાન્ હરિયૂધપઃ|
દુઃખા દુઃખાભિભૂતાયાઃ સાંત્વ મુત્તર મબ્રવીત્||1||

સ|| હરિયૂધપઃ દુઃખાત્ દુઃખાભિભૂતાયાઃ તસ્યાઃ તત્ વચનં શ્રુત્વા સાંત્વં ઉત્તરં અબ્રવીત્||

Hearing the words of the one who was overwhelmed with sadness, Hanuman spoke words of consolation in reply.

અહં રામસ્ય સંદેશાત્ દેવિ દૂતસ્તવાગતઃ|
વૈદેહી કુશલી રામઃ ત્વાં ચ કૌશલમબ્રવીત્||2||
યો બ્રહ્મમસ્ત્રં વેદાંશ્ચ વેદ વેદવિદાં વરઃ|
સ ત્વા દાશરથી રામો દેવિ કૌશલ મબ્રવીત્||3||
લક્ષ્મણશ્ચ મહાતેજા ભર્તુસ્તેಽનુચરઃ પ્રિયઃ|
કૃતવાન્ શોકસંતપ્તઃ શિરસા તે અભિવાદનમ્||4||

સ|| દેવી અહં રામસ્ય દૂતઃ તવ સંદેશાત્ આગતઃ| વૈદેહી કુશલી રામઃ ત્વાં ચ કૌશલં અબ્રવીત્|| વેદવિદાં વરઃ યઃ બ્રહ્મમ્ અસ્ત્રં ચ વેદાંશ્ચ વેદ સઃ દાશરથી રામઃ ત્વાં કૌશલં અબ્રવીત્ || તે ભર્તુઃ અનુચરઃ મહાતેજાઃ લક્ષ્મણઃ ચ શોકસંતપ્તઃ તે શિરસા અભિવાદનં કૃતવાન્ ||

Oh Devi ! I am Rama's messenger, came here for you on his orders. Oh Vaidehi! Rama who is well, is enquiring your welfare. The one who knows all Vedas, who knows Brahma astra and Vedas too, who is a son of Dasaratha, that Rama asks about your welfare. Your husband's follower, the very mighty Lakshmana immersed in grief, bowing his head, offers salutations to you.

સા તયોઃ કુશલં દેવી નિશમ્ય નરસિંહયોઃ|
પ્રીતિસંહૃષ્ટ સર્વાંગી હનૂમંતં અથાબ્રવીત્||5||
કલ્યાણી બતગાથેયં લૌકીકિ પ્રતિભાતિ મા|
એતિ જીવિતમાનંદો નરં વર્ષશતાદપિ||6||

સ|| અથ સા દેવી પ્રીતિસંહૃષ્ટસર્વાંગી તયોઃ નરસિંહયોઃ કુશલં નિશમ્ય પ્રીતિ સંહૃષ્ટઃ હનુમંતં અબ્રવીત્|| જીવંતં નરં વર્ષશતાદપિ જીવંતં (તદા) આનંદઃ એતિ લૌકીકિ ગાધા કલ્યાણિ ઇતિ મે પ્રતિભાતિ||

Then that lady experiencing pleasure all over her limbs, hearing the welfare of the two lions among men, spoke to Hanuman. "The popular adage that ' the human being who lives hundred years finds happiness ', appears to me as true".

તયા સમાગતે તસ્મિન્ પ્રીતિરુત્પાદિતાદ્ભુતા|
પરસ્પરેણ ચાલાપં વિશ્વસ્તૌતૌ પ્રચક્રતુઃ||7||
તસ્યાઃ તદ્વચનં શ્રુત્વા હનુમાન્ હરિયૂધપઃ|
સીતાયાઃ શોકદીનાયાઃ સમીપમુપચક્રમે||8||

સ|| સમાગતે તસ્મિન્ તથા અદ્ભુતા પ્રીતિઃ ઉત્પાદિતા | તૌ વિશ્વસ્તૌ પરસ્પરેણ આલાપં ચ ચક્રતુઃ|| હનુમાન્ હરિયૂધપઃ સીતાયાઃ શોકદીનાયાઃ તસ્યાઃ સમીપં ઉપચક્રમે ||

As they conversed with each other, wonderful pleasure was felt by her. Both of them felt confidence in each other and conversed. Hanuman the best among Vanaras moved near Sita who is stricken with grief.

યથા યથા સમીપં સ હનુમાનુપસર્પતિ|
તથા તથા રાવણં સા તં સીતા પરિશંકતે||9||
અહોધિગ્દુષ્કૃત મિદં કથિતં હિ ય દસ્ય મે|
રૂપાંતર મુપાગમ્ય સ એવાયં હિ રાવણઃ||10||
તામશોકસ્ય શાખાં સા વિમુક્ત્વા શોકકર્શિતા|
તસ્યા મે વાનવદ્યાંગી ધરણ્યાં સમુપાવિશત્||11||

સ|| યથા યથા સઃ હનુમાન્ ઉપસર્પતિ તથા તથા સા સીતા તં રાવણં પરિશંકતે||અહો યદિ અયં રૂપાંતરં ઉપાગમ્ય સઃ રાવણઃ હિ (અસ્તિ) ઇદં અસ્ય મે કથિતં દુષ્કૃતં ધિક્|| અનવદ્યાંગી સા અશોકશ્ચ શાખામ્ વિમુક્ત્વા શોકકર્શિતા તસ્યાં ધરણ્યામેવ સમુપાવિશત્ ||

As Hanuman slowly moved towards her, Sita suspected he might be Ravana. "Oh If this is that Ravana who is in disguise then I told him what should not have been told". That lady with flawless limbs, who is emaciated with grief, left the branch of the Ashoka tree held by her and squatted down on the ground.

હનુમાનપિ દુઃખાર્તાં તાં દૃષ્ટ્વા ભયમોહિતામ્|
અવંદત મહાબાહુઃ તતસ્તાં જનકાત્મજામ્||12||
સા ચૈનં ભયવિત્રસ્તા ભૂયો નૈવાભ્યુદૈક્ષત|
તં દૃષ્ટ્વા વંદમાનં તુ સીતા શશિનિભાનના||13||
અબ્રવીત્ દીર્ઘમુચ્છ્વસ્ય વાનરં મધુરસ્વરા|

સ|| મહાબાહુઃ હનુમાન્ અપિ દુઃખાર્તાં ભયમોહિતાં જનકાત્મજાં તાં દૃષ્ટ્વા અવંદત||ભયવિત્રસ્તા સા ચ એનં ભૂયઃ ન અભ્યુદૈક્ષત એવ| તં શશિનિભાનના સીતા દીર્ઘઃ ઉચ્છ્વસ્ય વંદમાનં વાનરં મધુર સ્વરા અબ્રવીત્ ||

Seeing that lady, daughter of Janaka, who is immersed in sorrow and filled with fear, Hanuman prostrated. Trembling with fear she did not even look at him. Then that moon faced lady Sita breathing deeply spoke softly to the Vanara who bowed down to her.

માયાં પ્રવિષ્ટો માયાવી યદિ ત્વં રાવણઃ સ્વયમ્||14||
ઉત્પાદયસિ મે ભૂયઃ સંતાપં તન્નશોભનમ્|
સ્વં પરિત્યજ્ય રૂપં યઃ પરિવ્રાજકરૂપધૃત્||15||
જનસ્થાને મયા દૃષ્ટઃ ત્વં સ એવાસિ રાવણઃ|
ઉપવાસકૃશાં દીનાં કામરૂપ નિશાચર||16||
સંતાપયસિ માં ભૂયઃ સંતપ્તાં તન્નશોભનમ્|

સ|| યદિ ત્વં સ્વયં માયાવી રાવણઃ માયાં પ્રવિષ્ટઃ મે ભૂયઃ સંતાપં ઉત્પાદયસિ તત્ ન શોભનમ્|| યઃ રાવણઃ સ્વં રૂપં પરિત્યજ્ય પરિવ્રાજક રૂપધૃત્ જનસ્થાને મયા દૃષ્ટઃ ત્વં સ એવ અસિ|| નિશાચર કામરૂપ ઉપવાસ કૃશાં સંતપ્તાં દીનાં માં ભૂયઃ સંતાપયસિ તત્ ન શોભનમ્||

"If you are the trickster Ravana himself and entered here in disguise , then you are again causing grief . That is not good. You are the same Ravana I saw in Janasthana who having given up his own form was disguised as a mendicant . Oh Vile night-being, who can assume any form, you are again making me, who is already in sorrow and in a pitiable condition, who is emaciated due to fasting, more sorrowful. That is not good."

અથવા નૈતદેવં હિ યન્મયા પરિશંકિતમ્||17||
મનસો હિ મમ પ્રીતિરુત્પન્ના તવદર્શનાત્|
યદિ રામસ્ય દૂતસ્ત્વં આગતો ભદ્રમસ્તુતે||18||
પૃછ્છામિ ત્વાં હરિશ્રેષ્ઠ પ્રિયા રામકથા હિ મે|
ગુણાન્ રામસ્ય કથય પ્રિયસ્ય મમ વાનર||19||
ચિત્તં હરસિ મે સૌમ્ય નદીકૂલં યથા રયઃ

સ|| અથવા મયા યત્ પરિશંકિતં એતત્ એવં ન હિ (કિંતુ) તવ દર્શનાત્ મમ મનસઃ પ્રીતિઃ ઉત્પન્ન હિ ||યદિ ત્વં રામસ્ય દૂતઃ આગતઃ તે ભદ્રં અસ્તુ | હરિશ્રેષ્ઠ ત્વાં મે પ્રિયા રામકથા પૃચ્છામિ | વાનર મમ પ્રિયસ્ય રામસ્ય ગુણાન્ કથય | હે સૌમ્ય યથા નદીકૂલં રયઃ તથા મે ચિત્તં હરસિ ||

"Or this may only be my suspicion because after seeing you my pleasure is generated in my mind. If you are Rama's messenger may all be well with you. Oh best of Vanaras! I am asking you tell me the story of Rama. Oh Vanara tell my dear Rama's virtues, Oh Gentle one! Like the currents in the river bank, you are luring my mind".

અહો સ્વપ્નસ્ય સુખતા યાsહમેવં ચિરાહૃતા||20||
પ્રેષિતં નામ પશ્યામિ રાઘવેણ વનૌકસં|
સ્વપ્નેಽપિ યદ્યહં વીરં રાઘવં સહ લક્ષ્મણમ્||21||
પશ્યેયં નાવસીદેયં સ્વપ્નોಽસિ મમમત્સરી|
નાહં સ્વપ્ન મહં મન્યે સ્વપ્ને દૃષ્ટ્વા હિ વાનરમ્||22||
ન શક્યોಽભ્યુદયઃ પ્રાપ્તું પ્રાપ્ત શ્ચાભ્યુદયો મમ|

સ|| સ્વપ્નસ્ય સુખતા અહો ચિરાહૃતા યા રાઘવેણ પ્રેષિતં નામ વનૌકસં એવમ્ પશ્યામિ || સ્વપ્ને અપિ સહલક્ષ્મણં વીરં રાઘવં પશ્યેયં યદિ ન અવસીદેયં મમ સ્વપ્નઃ અપિ મત્સરી|| અહં ઇયં સ્વપ્નં ન મન્યે| સ્વપ્ને વાનરં દૃષ્ટ્વા અભ્યુદયઃ પ્રાપ્તું ન શક્યઃ | (પરંતુ) મમ અભ્યુદયઃ પ્રાપ્તઃ ચ ||

'Oh the pleasure of a dream, I have been seeing the Vanara sent by Raghava in that way only. Even in a dream, If I can see heroic Raghava along with Lakshmana I will not be despondent. Even a dream is inimical to me. I do not think this is a dream. Seeing a Vanara in dream you cannot get happy tidings. But I am experiencing happiness'.

'કિન્નુ સ્યાચ્ચિત્તમોહોಽયં ભવેદ્વાતગતિસ્ત્વિયમ્||23||
ઉન્માદજો વિકારો વા સ્યાદિયં મૃગતૃષ્ણિકા|
અથવા નાયમુન્માદો મોહોಽપ્યુન્માદલક્ષણઃ||24||
સંબુધ્યે ચાહ માત્માનં ઇમં ચાપિ વનૌકસમ્|
ઇત્યેવં બહુધા સીતા સંપ્રધાર્ય બલાબલમ્||25||
રક્ષસાં કામરૂપત્વાન્ મેને તં રાક્ષસાધિપમ્|

સ|| અયં ચિત્તમોહઃ સ્યાત્ કિં નુ ? ઇયં વાતગતિઃ ભવેત્ | ઉન્માદજઃ વિકારો વા| ઇયં મૃગતૃષ્ણિકા સ્યાત્ ||અથવા ન યં ઉન્માદઃ ઉન્માદલક્ષણઃ મોહઃ અપિ ન|અહં આત્માનમ્ ઇયં વનૌકસાં સંબુધ્યે||સીતા ઇત્યેવં બલાબલં બહુધા સંપ્રધાર્ય રક્ષસાં કામરૂપત્વાત્ તં રાક્ષસાધિપમ્ મેને||

' May be this is a delusion of the mind. This may be mental imbalance. It may have developed out of madness or change. This could be a mirage too. But this is not insanity or nor is it delusion a sign of insanity. I am myself recognizing this Vanara'. Thus Sita in many ways weighing the strength and weakness of her thoughts and after reconsideration, decided that he is indeed the king of Rakshasas who can take any form .

'એતાં બુદ્ધિં તદા કૃત્વા સીતા સા તનુમધ્યમા||26||
ન પ્રતિ વ્યાજહારાsથ વાનરં જનકાત્મજા|
સીતાયાશ્ચિંતિતં બુદ્ધ્વા હનુમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ||27||
શ્રોત્રાનુકૂલૈ ર્વચનૈઃ તદા તાં સંપ્રહર્ષયત્|

સ|| તદા સા તનુમધ્યમા જનકાત્મજા એતાં બુદ્ધિં કૃત્વા અથ વાનરં પ્રતિ ન વ્યાજહાર || હનુમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ સીતાયાઃ ચિંતિતં બુદ્ધ્વાતદા શ્રોત્રાનુકૂલૈઃ વચનૈઃ તાં સંપ્રહર્ષયત્ ||

Then that slender waisted daughter of Janaka, having entertained these thoughts did not respond to the Vanara. Then Hanuman, the son of wind god, having understood Sita's thoughts spoke pleasing words that brought joy.

અદિત્ય ઇવ તેજસ્વી લોકકાંતઃ શશી યથા||28||
રાજા સર્વસ્ય લોકસ્ય દેવો વૈશ્રવણો યથા|
વિક્રમેણોપપન્નશ્ચ યથા વિષ્ણુ ર્મહાયશાઃ||29||
સત્યવાદી મથુરવાગ્દેવો વાચસ્પતિ ર્યથા|
રૂપવાન્ સુભગઃ શ્રીમાન્ કંદર્પ ઇવ મૂર્તિમાન્||30||

સ||અદિત્ય ઇવ તેજસ્વી શશી યથા લોકકાંતઃ દેવઃ વૈશ્રવણો યથા સર્વસ્ય લોકસ્ય રાજા મહાયશાઃ વિષ્ણુ યથા વિક્રમેણ ઉપપન્નઃ ચ||સત્યવાદી વાચસ્પતી યથા મધુર વાગ્દેવઃ | રૂપવાન્ સુભગઃ શ્રીમાન્ મૂર્તિમાન્ કંદર્પ ઇવ||

"He is Glorious like Sun, brings delight to the whole world like Moon, king of kings like Vaisrava, renowned like Vishnu endowed with valor. truthful in speech like Brihaspati, handsome, graceful, prosperous personification like Kamadeva.

સ્થાનક્રોથઃપ્રહર્તા ચ શ્રેષ્ઠો લોકે મહારથઃ|
બાહુચ્છાયા મવષ્ટબ્ધો યસ્ય લોકો મહાત્મનઃ||31||
અપકૃષ્યાશ્રમપદાન્ મૃગરૂપેણ રાઘવં|
શૂન્યે યેનાપનીતાપિ તસ્ય દ્રક્ષ્યસિ યત્ ફલમ્||32||

સ|| સ્થાનક્રોધઃ પ્રહર્તા ચ લોકે શેષ્ઠઃ મહારથઃ લોકઃ યસ્ય મહાત્મનઃ બાહુચ્છાયામવષ્ટભ્યો ||યેન રાઘવં મૃગરૂપેણ આશ્રમપદાત્ અપકૃષ્ય શૂન્યે અપનીતા અસિ ત્વયા યત્ ફલં દ્રક્ષ્યસિ||

He shows anger to the right persons, punishes too. Foremost among charioteers, a great self under the shadow of whose shoulders the world takes refuge. Such Raghava has been deceived by Ravana and from the empty Ashrama you were brought. The result of that deceitful action you will see.

'ન ચિરાત્ રાવણં સંખ્યે યો વધિષ્યતિ વીર્યવાન્|
રોષપ્રમુક્તૈ રિષુભિઃ જ્વલદ્ભિરિવ પાવકૈઃ||33||
તેનાહં પ્રેષિતો દૂતઃ ત્વત્સકાશ મિહાગતઃ|
તદ્વિયોગેન દુઃખાર્તઃ સ ત્વાં કૌશલમબ્રવીત્||34||

સ|| વીર્યવાન્ યઃ નચિરાત્ રોષપ્રમુક્તૈઃ જ્વલદ્ભિઃ પાવકૈઃ ઇવ ઇષુભિઃ સંખ્યે રાવણં વધિષ્યતિ| તેન દૂતઃ પ્રેષિતઃ ઇહ ત્વત્સકાશં આગતઃ | ત્વદ્વિયોગેન દુઃખાર્તઃ સઃ ત્વાં કૌશલં અબ્રવીત્ ||

'The heroic one will soon will kill Ravana in war with burning arrows released in great anger. I am the messenger sent by him standing in your presence. He enquires about your well-being'.

લક્ષ્મણશ્ચ મહાતેજાઃ સુમિત્રાનંદવર્ધનઃ|
અભિવાદ્ય મહાબાહુઃ સ ત્વાં કૌશલમબ્રવીત્||35||
રામસ્ય ચ સખા દેવિ સુગ્રીવો નામ વાનરઃ|
રાજા વાનરમુખ્યાનાં સ ત્વાં કૌશલમબ્રવીત્ ||36||

સ|| મહાતેજઃ સુમિત્રાનંદવર્ધનઃ મહાબાહુઃ લક્ષ્મણઃ ચ અભિવાદ્ય સઃ ત્વાં કૌશલં અબ્રવીત્ || દેવી રામસ્ય ચ સખા સુગ્રીવઃ નામ વાનરઃ વાનરમુખ્યાનાં રાજા સઃ ત્વાં કૌશલં અબ્રવીત્ ||

'Lakshmana, the brilliant long armed one, the delight of Sumitra, offering salutations asks about your well-being. Oh Devi! Rama's friend, Vanara by name Sugriva, king of Vanaras chiefs asks about your well-being'.

'નિત્યં સ્મરતિ રામઃ ત્વાં સસુગ્રીવઃ સલક્ષ્મણઃ|
દિષ્ટ્યા જીવસિ વૈદેહી રાક્ષસીવશમાગતા||37||
ન ચિરાત્ દ્રક્ષ્યસે રામં લક્ષ્મણં ચ મહાબલમ્|
મધ્યે વાનર કોટીનાં સુગ્રીવં ચામિતૌજસમ્||38||

સ||વૈદેહી સસુગ્રીવઃ સ લક્ષ્મણઃ ચ રામઃ ત્વાં નિત્યમ્ સ્મરતિ|રાક્ષસીવશમ્ આગતા દિષ્ટ્યા જીવસિ ||રામમ્ મહાબલં લક્ષ્મણં ચ વાનર કોટીનાં મધ્યે અમિતૌજસાં સુગ્રીવં ચ ન ચિરાત્ દ્રક્ષ્યસે||

"Oh Vaidehi! Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugriva always thinks about you. By fortune, you are alive, though fallen into the hands of Rakshasis. You will soon see mighty Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugriva of unlimited prowess surrounded by crores of Vanaras".

અહં સુગ્રીવ સચિવો હનુમાન્ નામ વાનરઃ|
પ્રવિષ્ઠો નગરીં લંકાં લંઘયિત્વા મહોદધિમ્||39||
કૃત્વા મૂર્થ્નિ પદન્યાસં રાવણસ્ય દુરાત્મનઃ|
ત્વાં દ્રષ્ટુ મુપયાતોಽહં સમાશ્રિત્ય પરાક્રમમ્||40||

સ|| અહમ્ સુગ્રીવ સચિવઃ | હનુમાન્ નામ વાનરઃ| મહોદધિં લંઘયિત્વા લંકાં નગરીં પ્રવિષ્ઠઃ ||દુરાત્મનઃ રાવણસ્ય મૂર્ધ્નિઃ પદાન્યાસં કૃત્વા પરાક્રમં સમાશ્રિત્ય અહં ત્વાં દ્રષ્ટું ઉપયાતઃ||

'I am the minister of Sugriva. A Vanara by name Hanuman. Crossing the great ocean I have entered the city of Lanka. Stepping on the head of the vile Ravana, using my valor I have come to see you'.

'નાહ મસ્મિ તથા દેવી યથા મામ્ અવગચ્છસિ|
વિશંકા ત્યજતાં એષા શ્રદ્ધત્સ્વ વદતો મમ||41||

સ|| દેવી માં યથા અવગચ્છસિ અહં તથા ન અસ્મિ | એષા વિશંકા ત્યજતાં વદતઃ મમ શ્રદ્ધત્સ્વ||

'Oh Devi I am not what you are thinking. Leave those doubts as I speak to you and trust me'.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાંડે ચતુસ્ત્રિંશસ્સર્ગઃ||

Thus ends the thirty fourth Sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
